How Northstar Heating & Air San Francisco Was Born in San Francisco

It was a Tuesday in November, about eleven years ago. A woman in Visitacion Valley called us in tears. She’d paid another company $890 to fix her furnace, they’d replaced a part that didn’t need replacing, and two days later her house was freezing again. We found a loose wire connection they’d missed, or ignored. Took twenty minutes. She paid us nothing for the diagnosis, just the service call. She insisted on paying more. We wouldn’t take it.

That night, Daniel sat in his truck on Bayshore Boulevard watching the fog roll over the hill, and made a decision. San Francisco deserved better than what the HVAC industry was handing out: inflated bills, phantom repairs, technicians who couldn’t explain what they’d done in plain English. We started Northstar the following spring with a simple promise we’d write on a notecard and tape to the dash of our first van: “Fix it right. Tell the truth. Let them sleep warm.”

We’ve added vans since then. That notecard is still there, faded and curling at the edges.

Daniel Okafor’s Personal Connection to the HVAC Trade

Daniel didn’t plan on this. He was twenty-two, working warehouse shifts in the East Bay, when his grandmother’s heater failed during a cold snap. The first company quoted her $2,400 for a full replacement. She was on a fixed income. Daniel spent three days in her cramped basement in the Mission District, borrowing manuals from the library, calling every parts supplier he could find. He remembers the smell of old dust burning off the heat exchanger when he finally got it running. The sound of her laughing when warm air came through the vent. The way she made him pozole and wouldn’t let him leave until he’d eaten two bowls.

That basement taught him something he couldn’t unlearn: most people don’t care about BTUs or SEER ratings. They care about their mother being warm. Their baby sleeping through the night. Their home feeling safe when the fog sits heavy outside. Ten years later, that still gets him out of bed before dawn. The calls from Noe Valley at 6 a.m., from Chinatown at midnight. Someone cold. Someone worried. Someone who’s been told they need a system they can’t afford.

If he weren’t doing this, Daniel says he’d probably be teaching somewhere, or fixing old motorcycles. He likes things that make sense when you understand them, and he likes making people understand. The work is physical, diagnostic, honest in a way that warehouse work never was. Every system has a logic. Every problem has a cause. The reward isn’t the repair, it’s the exhale on the other end of the phone when a homeowner realizes they’re not being taken advantage of.

He still thinks about his grandmother’s basement. Still calls her before every first cold night of the season to make sure her system’s running.

Meet Daniel Okafor — The Person Behind Every Job

Daniel Okafor is Owner and Lead Technician at Northstar Heating & Air San Francisco. He’s the person who answers your call, runs your diagnostic, and stands behind the work. His training spans residential and light commercial HVAC systems, with deep hands-on experience across every major manufacturer, including York, Daikin, and Bryant equipment commonly installed throughout San Francisco’s varied housing stock.

What separates Daniel from a corporate franchise technician is simple: he’s not incentivized to sell you anything. He owns the business. His name is on the van, on the invoice, on every review. When something goes wrong, there’s no escalation chain, no regional manager to hide behind. He fixes it himself.

Outside of work, Daniel volunteers with a youth trades program in the Bayview, teaching basic home maintenance to kids who’ve never held a screwdriver. He believes every person should understand the systems they depend on. When you hire Northstar, you’re not getting a dispatcher and a random tech. You’re getting Daniel, his experience, and his word that he’ll treat your home like his grandmother’s basement.

Our Promise to San Francisco Homeowners

Honest pricing. We quote before we work, every time. No surprises, no “while we were in there” add-ons. Daniel learned this the hard way, watching his grandmother face a bill that would have emptied her savings. Our estimates are free because you shouldn’t pay to find out whether you can afford the repair.

Quality parts. We source components from authorized distributors, not discount warehouses. A capacitor that fails in six months costs more than a proper one installed once. We warranty our repairs for a full year because we expect them to last.

Standing behind every job. If we miss something, we fix it. No argument, no paperwork shuffle. Last winter, a thermostat we installed had a defective batch issue. Daniel drove to Pacific Heights at 9 p.m. on a Saturday to swap it personally, brought the homeowner coffee, and wouldn’t accept payment for the callback. That’s not policy. That’s just how it should be.

Our Credentials

  • State-licensed HVAC contractor
  • Insured & bonded for your protection
  • 10+ years serving San Francisco homeowners
  • 357 verified reviews averaging 4.9 out of 5 stars

These aren’t decorations. A state license means we’ve met California’s rigorous training and examination standards for contractors working in your home. Insurance and bonding protect you if something goes wrong, a wall gets damaged, a technician gets injured on your property. Ten years in San Francisco means we’ve worked on Victorians in Noe Valley with original ductwork, modern condos in SoMa with mini-splits, and everything between. We know how the salt air corrodes coastal condensers, how the hills affect airflow, how the city’s permit process actually works.

Those 357 reviews represent real San Francisco homeowners who took time to write about their experience. A 4.9 average doesn’t happen by accident in this city. It happens by showing up, telling the truth, and fixing what you said you’d fix.

Rooted in San Francisco

We’re not a franchise that dropped into the Bay Area last quarter. Daniel lives here, raised his family here, knows the difference between the microclimate in the Sunset and the heat pockets in the Mission. We’ve replaced furnaces in Chinatown walk-ups where the access is a narrow stairwell built in 1923. We’ve installed American Standard systems in Clarendon Heights homes with views of the whole city. Daniel still stops for dim sum on Clement Street after jobs in the Richmond, still catches the Lunar New Year parade when he’s not on call. Northstar isn’t a brand we bought into. It’s a name we built, one honest repair at a time, in the city that raised us.
